As the Lord Gro mentioned
to The Red Foliot in The Worm Ouroboros, "The harvest of this world is to the resolute, and he that is infirm of purpose is ground betwixt the upper and the nether millstone." It is certainly true that he who doth not keep up with technology will find the upper and the nether millstone keeping him close company post haste. With this in mind DDG has called upon the youthful expertise of Reid Brechner to work us up a DDG facebook Fan Page. The big thing now, obviously, is to drum up fans. The nascent self esteem of our new facebook page depends upon that entirely! This is where you come in. Yes, it's come to this, we'll be monitoring the right side bar with bated breath, waiting for new faces to appear. Would Jane Austen have approved of this sort of social networking? No! Should you fan
our facebook page anyway? Yes! Jane's approval, though usually a good idea, will not get you DDG event updates, event photos, and a chance to drop us an electronic line. We'd love to hear from you.
In other news we want to thank wonderful authors Cynthia Lord, Lea Wait, and everyone who came out to greet them at our Kids♥Authors Day event (pictured above right). A lovely time was had by all.
Here they are! Our weekly picks for the two best: two hardcover, two paperback, and two children's books. The very best new arrivals to leap out of the box and onto our shelves this week. Call or email us if you want more information on any of these titles, or to have us hold you a copy. Or stop in and check them out in person. We'd love to see you. Thanks as always for sharing your reading with us!

Orson Scott Card, who takes his book blurbs seriously, is quoted on the back of Lamentation to say that "this is the golden age of fantasy, with a dozen masters doing their best work. Then along comes Ken Scholes, with his amazing clarity, power and invention, and shows us all how its done." It's not surprising, therefore, that Tor publishing feels like they have a winner in first time fantasy novelist Ken Scholes. So yes, I hate myself for not having read it yet....More

A new edition of the gold standard in baseball dictionaries, The Dickson Baseball Dictionary is out today, and makes a lovely gift. What is DDG's position on steroids? I looked it up in Dickson which notes that a steroid is "a fat soluble organic compound with a specific physiological action." Hard to say but it doesn't sound like it would help with bookselling as much as coffee does....More

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher is the second non fiction effort by Kate Summerscale, author of the excellent The Queen of Whale Cay. This exploration, or should we say exhumation of the dawn of the modern fascination with the murder mystery, features a very compelling account of an 1860 Scotland Yard case. Full of interest and well turned phrases this is clearly a book to snatch up in paperback....More

This was a book reputed to be very good, which I didn't bring in when it was a hardcover because the cover was so poorly conceived. The publisher appears of have thought better of things at the last minute, as the paperback version came out of the box graced by the tolerable okay cover on the right. Is Jerome Charyn in fact "one of the most important writers in American Literature" as Michael Chabon blurbs on the cover? Well, at least we can try and answer that question with a straight face now....More

Okay, we all know that it's kind of cheating to have a picture book filled with really cute panda photographs, but Markle, who is a former elementary school science teacher, has filled the book with really interesting information as well. The simple counting concept will engage toddlers, while older siblings will love all the details....More

This is an unusually lovely picture book which provides information on birds for young children. Dronzek's drawings are exquisite, and Henkes text is just right, warm and direct, to really engage his audience....More
