This week we are featuring some of the outstanding entries from The Mallett School Book Review Contest. The top three reviewers, Hayley, Alden, and Abby can be seen to the right clutching their prizes. They had a choice between picking out one of the stuffed dogs we carry at the store or receiving a DDG Gift certificate. Going up against those Shi Tzus presented a stiff challenge, to be sure, but we're excited to have squeaked by into the winner's circle. One of the many nice things about these reviews, apart from their obvious charm, is their gift to older eyes of a fresh perspective on such classic children's books as
Charlotte's Web, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and
The Giver. How pleasant it is to remember that every time a great book is read by a new reader it is being read for the first time. So congratulations to all the great reviewers, there were thirteen winners in all, and enjoy the fine work below.

By Hayley Garcia, Grade 3 - (A Top 3 Review!) You know I think a lot of kids who like big chapter books would like this book. Why? It's about two kids who run away from home and at one point in everyone's life we want to run away. You will be surprised where they hide out and what they discover. But you have to love big books and big words like me. Well I think you'll like it. That means a reader such as me....More

By Alden Thompson Vought, Grade 3 - (A Top 3 Review!) The Twits is probably one of Roald Dahl's most satisfactory accomplishments in his time. Everyone I know (including me) gaped when they were only half way through! (personally I was flabergasted when the last page was turned.) The word choice is absolutely hilarious, and the pictures will make you double over you'll be laughing so hard. In other words you should buy The Twits simple as that....More

By Abby Mccarthy, Grade 3 - (A Top 3 Review!) My Life in Dog Years is the best book I have ever read in my life. It is about a man that has had many dogs. Every chapter is about a dog he has had. All of the chapters have excellent detail and are all exciting stories. Some parts are funny. Like when the Great Dane eats all the childrens' hot dogs at the party at the ball field. I thought when Jeff the dog tickled the man when he was in a bad mood and cheered him up was funny. I would recommend this book for dog lovers. I loved it! ...More

By Maeve Hickey, Grade 2: I think you should really, really, really, read this book, because it is exciting, and interesting and intense. I also really like it because it sort of jumpy and scary. Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets is scary, but it doesn't give you nightmares. Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets is so exciting that once you start reading it you can never stop. You should also read it because it has a lot of details and good describing words. So please, please, please read this book....More

By Audrey Keith, Grade 3: This is the best book ever since the character, Clementine, is so funny when the teacher says pay attention. She thinks she is but then she thinks the teacher means to pay attention to the things around you. She thinks that the best place to find names is in the bathroom. When she comes out of the bathroom with her cat she had the most fabulous name ever, mouster. And that is how funny she is. If you want to get to know more about Clementine then read the book....More

By Madison Ladd, Grade 3: The Giver is my favorite book because the author gave a lot of details. It is about a boy who imagines someone is watching him. I like this book because the characters acted the same way some other people do. The ending is the saddest part because the main character, Jonas, died in the end. The choice of words was awesome because they used powerful words like frightening, astonished, wonderful, ceremony, and amazing. It is the best book in the world....More
